Steel cylinder head gaskets usually have text embossed on them. The word ¡®TOP¡¯ or ¡®OBEN¡¯ must face upwards.
These head gaskets have a flanged metal edge (fire ring) at the cylinder openings, which seals the combustion chambers. The smooth, continuous side of the flange is placed against the engine block, and the open edge or visible fold of the flange faces upwards towards the cylinder head.
